Coming from India and not knowing France, my residence in CROUS-Caen, its surroundings and my neighbours have shaped my environment since my arrival in France. Since then, my interactions with my neighbours and my experiences in this environment have influenced my experience of being in a foreign country and have greatly influenced my thinking about the city.
The period of confinement made me spend more time in my building, which gave me many opportunities to meet and talk with my neighbours. Especially during the second phase of confinement we started to meet more often. During one of our conversations, I approached them with the idea of photographing in their personal spaces as well as in the common spaces during the confinement period.
Photography became a method of interacting or conversing with the people around me. The photographic act became a tool for exploring the building, its surroundings and the people who live in it, where the photograph does not become the 'finished product' or the 'result', but rather seems to be placed at the centre of our interactions. The whole act creates a space for exchange, for sharing experiences, memories and opinions. Photography thus becomes an act of participation at either end of the camera.
