Turning Back

Turning Back is a large charcoal drawing based on a photograph of my home in India. Drawn in black and white with reversed tonal values, the image transforms a familiar domestic interior into a space of distance, memory and projection.

A video screen is integrated into the drawing. It shows conversations recorded with friends during the making of the work, in which they share memories of their own childhood, homes and families. The drawing becomes a place where a personal image of home opens onto other people’s memories.
