Almost There
2025
Almost There is a series of graphite drawings made from photographs taken in my native village in India. Each drawing begins with a uniform layer of graphite applied to the paper; the image then appears through gestures of erasure. Instead of being built by addition, the landscape emerges through subtraction, as if recovered from a surface already marked by distance and time.
The works remain between presence and disappearance. Structures, vegetation, rooftops, sky and domestic fragments appear partially, suspended in a pale grey atmosphere. The title suggests a state of nearness that is never fully reached: the image is almost present, the place almost recognizable, the memory almost returned.
