En devenir

2022 — 2023

En devenir is a series of five large graphite portraits made from photographs shared by people I met through Maison Rester. Étranger at Saint-Denis. The portraits do not seek to fix an identity or produce a clear documentary image. Instead, they hold the figures in a state of uncertainty, between appearance and disappearance, visibility and withdrawal.

Drawn in pale graphite and placed horizontally on the floor, the works were held in place by small stones collected from the street. En devenir reflects on the ethics of portraiture when the person represented is situated within a condition of passage. The work does not attempt to speak for its subjects or reduce their experience to a narrative of migration. Instead, it creates a space of attention where the portrait remains open, incomplete and fragile — a temporary surface through which presence, memory and relation can appear.
